“Asset” is a thing that has intrinsic value to an organisation.
“Configuration Item” or “CI” is any component of an IT Infrastructure, including a documentary item such as a Service Level Agreement or a Request For Change, which is (or is to be) under the control of Configuration Management and therefore subject to formal Change Control.
Assets are often CI’s but CI’s are not always Assets.
Your virtual server is indeed a virtual asset and needs to be managed with build, deployment & decomissioning services as much as a physical asset.
The software package itself needs to separated from the installed software on the physical or virtual assets as well as the contract where the 50 licences reside.
The cloud service with 50 users needs to be managed just like traditional software. Access needs to be approved, actioned, monitored and revoked.
