SQL Server - Instance stacking for Enterprise Edition per VM?
The Per Core license model terms state that unlimited running instances of the software may be installed in a Virtual OSE.
So, if I read that correctly, as long as I license all cores (vCPUs) assigned to a VM with SQL Server Enterprise Edition per core can I then run multiple SQL Server instances within that VM? And do Down Edition rights apply?
Currently we license per VM (or Server+CAL) for SQL Server Standard with a single SQL instance per VM but now have a potential requirement (because EU-GDPR) to deploy Enterprise Edition. Due to high core densities on the hardware licensing all physical cores will not be cost effective. Stacking several instances of Enterprise Edition within a couple of VMs would likely reduce the core requirement from 24 to 8 or possibly 12 - either way a very significant saving.
