IBM forcing double licensing
An ITAM Review reader writes:
"I have established that we have a lot of duplicate licensing, such as Production Imaging Edition (PIE) Authorised User and several of its components licensed separately. After requesting to stop paying S&S on the component parts IBM advised me that even though I have the latest version of PIE under active S&S, it doesn’t give me grandfathering rights to license rights for older deployments, and if I have less than version 5.2, as an example, deployed of the part product, I have to license it with the part product. Then once I upgrade it I can cover it with PIE. As we license our entire DataCap environment with PIE, this is forcing me to purchase 2 licenses for one install if it’s on a version less than 5.2, and then leaves me with shelf ware once we upgrade to 5.2 and above. IBM is the first vendor that I’ve come across that are forcing you to double license based on your deployed versions, and not on your license entitlements. This seems to be so backwards to me, and is just screwing the customers for more revenue. It also seems virtually impossible to manage."
