Introducing SQL Standard into a SQL Enterprise core licensed virtual cluster
I am licensing my virtual SQL cluster by counting the physical cores of the underlying ESX hosts. Hence my estate is made up of Enterprise Edition instances on virtual machines, licensed by Enterprise cores as opposed to licensing by individual VMs. If I introduce a SQL Standard instance into onto a VM in the cluster, do you know if it would be covered by the already licensed Enterprise cores or do I have to license the SQL Standard server by individual VM (vcpus)?
This note is in the SQL Server 2017 licensing guide:
Note: Licensing individual VMs is the only licensing option available for SQL Server 2017 Standard Edition customers who are running the software in a virtualized environment under the Per Core model.
